The Control of Airflow during Singing

چکیده

In singing, subglottal (lung or tracheal) air pressures as high as 40 or 50 cm H20 have been reported in singing at high volume levels. Such pressures are approximately 3 to 4 times the pressures used for speech. It might be hypothesized that, if not controlled by appropriate compensatory mechanisms, the high airflows that could be caused by such pressures might be detrimental to the mucosa of the vocal folds and would also deflate the lung volume more quickly between breath pauses.

Breathing and Singing: Objective Characterization of Breathing Patterns in Classical Singers

Singing involves distinct respiratory kinematics (i.e. movements of rib cage and abdomen) to quiet breathing because of different demands on the respiratory system. Professional classical singers often advocate for the advantages of an active control of the abdomen on singing performance. This is presumed to prevent shortening of the diaphragm, elevate the rib cage, and thus promote efficient g...

Corollary discharge inhibition of wind-sensitive cercal giant interneurons in the singing field cricket

Crickets carry wind-sensitive mechanoreceptors on their cerci, which, in response to the airflow produced by approaching predators, triggers escape reactions via ascending giant interneurons (GIs). Males also activate their cercal system by air currents generated due to the wing movements underlying sound production. Singing males still respond to external wind stimulation, but are not startled...

Role of syringeal muscles in gating airflow and sound production in singing brown thrashers.

1. The role of syringeal muscles in song production, particularly in regulating airflow through the syrinx, was studied in singing brown thrashers (Toxostoma rufum). In nine individuals, muscle activity was recorded electromyographically together with bilateral syringeal airflow, subsyringeal air sac pressure, and vocal output. 2. Dorsal muscles, m. syringealis dorsalis (dS) and m. tracheolater...
